New Orleans defeats Alcorn State 63-56

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Antonio Wertz scored 17 points to lead New Orleans over Alcorn State 63-56 on Sunday in the Hoops for Hope Classic.

With the game tied 7-7, the Privateers (4-4) exploded for a 24-3 run, capped by Brandon Knight’s jumper for a 31-10 lead with 5:09 left in the first half.

The Braves, who had five turnovers during the run, went without a field goal from the 14:35 mark in the first half until 4:34 remained until halftime.

New Orleans, which shot 43.9 percent from the field (29 of 66), held Alcorn State (1-4) to 35.5 percent shooting (22 of 62). The Braves managed just 20 percent from 3-point range (2 of 10).

New Orleans turned it over just eight times and tallied 13 assists as 12 players saw action.

Chris Brand had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Braves, and Twann Oakley had 16 points.
