ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — Lindsey Vonn has elected to skip the season-opening World Cup slalom event Sunday to rest a sore back.

The Olympic gold medalist tweaked her back last week while training in Aspen. She gave it a go Saturday in the giant slalom, but played it safe on her first run and couldn’t make up ground as she finished in 12th place.

Vonn plans to return to the slopes Tuesday for a downhill training run in Lake Louise, Alberta. She typically does very well on the hill at Lake Louise, piling up 14 podium finishes, including eight wins.

The Americans still have Julia Mancuso, fresh off her third-place finish Saturday, Sarah Schleper, 16-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin, Resi Stiegler, Kiley Staples and Hailey Duke in the field Sunday.
