Letter: Reject relentless holiday spending

Christmas once again approaches and once again gives cover to the excesses of the Church of Consumerism. Pretending to engage in selfless giving, we prepare for an orgy of shopping to provide lavish and useless gifts to those whom we expect to lavish equally useless and expensive gifts upon us in return.

I have another idea to offer. Give yourself, your time, your presence, your care. If you can’t live without spending money, buy a coat and give it to a poor kid, or give $25 or $50 or more to the Clark Public Utilities Operation Warm Heart to pay for a poor person’s heat or water.

I urge everyone to reject indiscriminate spending in the name of Christmas. That is not what Christmas is about.
