Washington State fires football coach Paul Wulff

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) -- Washington State football coach Paul Wulff has been fired.

The university said Tuesday that Wulff was let go after four years at the helm.

Wulff is 9-40 in his four seasons at Washington State, including a 4-8 record this season that doubled the Cougars' win total from 2010 but failed to quiet critics.

Wulff had one year remaining on his contract and was guaranteed a year's severance pay of $600,000 if he was let go before the end of the five years.
