La Center — Stephen Boynton, a 20-year Coast Guard veteran, knows firsthand about the hardships of being away from home during the holidays. This is why the owner of La Center Farms donates Christmas trees to the Trees for Troops program. Boynton, his wife, Lissa, and their two sons, Daniel, 12, and John, 10, shipped 100 Douglas fir trees to Marine families at Twentynine Palms, Calif. on Nov. 29. This is La Center Farms’ fourth year donating trees as a way to thank military families for the sacrifices they make. The Christmas tree farm is open for U-cut from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday until Dec. 23 at 31215 N.E. 40th Ave., La Center. With ID, a $5 discount will be given to all military, fire or police department personnel who are active duty, reserve, retired or volunteer.
