NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A fumble returned for a touchdown just before halftime by Onyemechi Anyaugo was the catalyst for Norfolk State’s 17-14 win over South Carolina State on Saturday.

Anyaugo’s 84-yard fumble return for a touchdown with 11 seconds remaining in first half put the Spartans ahead for good at 10-7. Norfolk State added a touchdown in the third quarter on a 2-yard run by Chris Walley with 1:40 to play to stretch the lead to 17-7.

It was only the third win in the series for the Spartans (4-1,2-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) in 17 meetings. The Spartans have allowed only 26 points during its three-game winning streak this season.

The Bulldogs (2-3, 2-1), which cut the deficit to 17-14 on a 3-yard run by Derrick Wiley with 9:39 to play, had a chance to tie but failed. Blake Erickson was wide left on a 20-yard field goal attempt with 3:36 to play.
