RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) — A contractor responsible for cleaning up radioactive waste in underground tanks at Hanford handed out 244 layoff notices Monday.
The Tri-City Herald reports (http://bit.ly/oBCWAZ) that’s about half the number of layoffs Washington River Protection Solutions expected to make because of budget cuts for the fiscal year starting Saturday.
Since the spring, at total of nearly 2,000 jobs have been cut from the 12,000 jobs at the nuclear reservation. Most cuts were due to federal stimulus money running out.
