TOWER CITY, N.D. (AP) — Authorities in southeast North Dakota using thermal imaging devices and night-vision goggles overnight were unable to find a convicted sex offender who escaped from a private transport company’s van.

The Forum newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/ngq90D ) that the search continued early Wednesday for Joseph Megna, who authorities say ran from the van during a stop west of Tower City. Tower City is about 45 miles west of Fargo, North Dakota’s largest city.

Megna was being transferred from Washington state to New Hampshire. Dozens of North Dakota law officers are searching by ground and air, and beefing up their presence in the communities of Tower City, Oriska and Buffalo.

The Times-Record newspaper reports that Valley City School Superintendent Dean Koppelman has put schools in that city on lockdown status as a precaution.
