In Mary Siegler’s Sept. 29 rebuttal letter, “Work for it, even in tough times,” to an earlier letter writer, Siegler asked the question: “Does [the earlier letter writer] really think it is the job of the rich, those who worked hard or had the smarts to go to college, to give him their money as a handout for housing and food?” Siegler leaves no doubt that she does not believe that.
However, Jesus does. In Matthew 16:21, Jesus remarks to a wealthy young man seeking the way to salvation “If you want to be perfect, go sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
Maybe Siegler can explain why conservatives consider the teachings of Jesus so un-American.
