MIAMI (AP) — Forecasters say recently formed Tropical Storm Jova continues to strengthen in the Pacific off Mexico.

The National Hurricane Center said at 11 p.m. EDT Thursday that Jova has top sustained winds of 45 mph (75 kph) and was centered about 490 miles (790 kilometers) south-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. Forecasters say Jova could become a hurricane by Saturday.

The storm’s exact path remains uncertain, but models show Jova could make landfall over mainland Mexico sometime next week.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Irwin also was swirling in the Pacific. Forecasters said it was expected to become a hurricane on Friday, but it’s not yet clear if Irwin will affect land.

In the Atlantic, Hurricane Philippe was far off the U.S. coast and was not expected to threaten land.
