Letter: Dogs are useful in protecting stock

I feel sympathy for the ranchers in Oregon and Washington who may be losing livestock to wolves, but I am sad to think the only solution people seem to come up with is killing wolves.

Have they considered getting Great Pyrenees dogs, who have been bred for centuries to patrol ranchland and protect sheep? These dogs and other similar breeds would deter the wolves from hunting sheep and would keep them away. Wolves shouldn’t have to die when there is a viable option. We know of an alpaca breeder who has never lost an alpaca to predation. He credits his Great Pyrenees dogs for this. Please consider methods other than killing wolves to protect your flocks.
