SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) — A man who deliberately drove off a California freeway to get attention from his ex-girlfriend has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for killing two tourists run down by his car.

Jerardo Iriarte pleaded no contest to two counts of second-degree murder for killing Washington visitors Bruce and Marjorie Mallin, who were on a morning walk last October outside a Pismo Beach restaurant.

The Santa Maria Times (http://bit.ly/nCUJwJ ) said Thursday the 20-year-old Iriarte was sentenced Wednesday after an emotional plea from the couple’s daughter.

The Mallins were struck down a year ago when Iriarte’s Toyota Corolla veered off U.S. Highway 101 at 80 mph and went down an embankment.

He told investigators he wanted to get the attention of his ex-girlfriend, who was working at the restaurant.
