TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) -- Commanders of Libya's revolutionary fighters say their troops are assaulting a convention center that serves as a key base for forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi in the center of the ousted leader's hometown.
With Grad rockets and tank fire clearing the way, the fighters drove farther into Sirte Friday in what Libya's transitional government hopes will be the final push into the holdout city. Fighting is also taking place around Green Square in the heart of the city.
Sirte is the last major city to remain in loyalist hands following the collapse of Gadhafi's 42-year rule in August.
Doctors at a field hospital say eight revolutionary fighters were killed Friday and one senior commander was wounded by sniper fire.
