VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) -- Authorities have filed an escape charge against a convicted sex offender from Washington state who was captured in a North Dakota cornfield after allegedly fleeing a private prisoner transport van during a rest stop.
The Forum newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/rj9t7s ) that bail for 29-year-old Joseph Megna was set at $100,000 on Thursday. Megna asked for a public defender. He faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
Barnes County Sheriff Randy McClaflin says Megna faces charges of gross sexual imposition and child molestation in Washington. He was being transported across the country after being arrested in Florida.
Megna told reporters after his arrest Wednesday that he fled the van because he was hungry.
