FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) — A man accused in the shooting death of a classmate nearly 30 years ago has been extradited to Oklahoma to face a first-degree murder charge.
KHOG-TV (http://bit.ly/omgJqj) reported Thursday that Suhail Shanti was returned to the LeFlore County Detention Center in Poteau, near the Arkansas border.
Shanti is scheduled to go before a judge on Friday so that an attorney can be appointed to represent him.
Prosecutors charged Shanti with first-degree murder in the December 1983 death of 21-year-old Mohammad Al-Zein, with whom he attended classes at what is now Carl Albert State College. Authorities say Shanti was released from custody on bond, but never came back to stand trial.
He was arrested in Washington state in June while trying to get into the United States from Canada.
