PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A Portland Fire and Rescue spokesman says a woman died after being trapped in an upstairs apartment when an aggressive fire broke out in a two-story building. Two other people were injured when they jumped from a second-story window.

Arriving fire crews tried to search for the woman Thursday morning but were driven back by temperatures that spokesman Paul Corah says hit 1,100 degrees. He says crews advanced by hitting the flames with water, which created steam and dropped the temperature to about 400 degrees.

The woman’s body was found in her bedroom. Neither she nor the injured were immediately identified.

The cause of the fire at the Normandy Apartments in northeast Portland is under investigation.
