Australia beats South Africa in quarterfinals

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Winger James O’Connor landed a 72nd-minute penalty and Australia rallied to beat South Africa 11-9 in the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals Sunday, ending the aging Springboks’ bid to defend their title.

The Wallabies, on track to become the first team to win the tournament three times, will face New Zealand, a 33-10 winner over Argentina, in the semifinals.

Wales and France won their quarterfinals Saturday.

In Auckland, Scrumhalf Piri Weepu booted over his first six shots at goal to help New Zealand take an 18-10 lead over Argentina after an hour.
