OXFORD, Ohio (AP) — Ara Parseghian says the scandals in some of college football’s biggest programs are “very, very upsetting,” and he’s proud that there were no such problems with his teams when he coached at Miami of Ohio, Northwestern and Notre Dame.

The 88-year-old former coach was one of four honored Saturday at Miami. The school added statues of Parseghian, John Pont, Bo Schembechler and Earl Blaik to its Cradle of Coaches Plaza outside the football stadium.

Parseghian says the competition for talent leads some to compromise their integrity. As a coach, he takes the most pride in the way his programs followed the rules.

Parseghian thinks that Notre Dame might be compelled to give up its independent status in football with the move to super conferences.
