Wait for Britain after shaky qualifying effort

TOKYO (AP) — Britain will have an anxious few hours after a shaky performance in qualifying at the world gymnastics championships Monday leaves the team on the bubbly for next summer’s London Olympics.

The top eight teams earn trips to London, and the British are currently sixth. But China, the Olympic champion and winner of the last four world titles, Russia, France and South Korea are still to come Monday. Japan leads qualifying with 364.291 points, followed by the United States and Germany.

The British have not sent a full men’s team to the Olympics since 1992. They appeared to be on track to secure a spot until a meltdown on high bar, when Daniel Keatings and Ruslan Panteleymonov fell and Kristian Thomas had several major form breaks. They had to count two scores
