TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama has given opposing defenses a little food for thought.

AJ McCarron and the second-ranked Crimson Tide showcased the passing game in Saturday night’s 34-0 win over Vanderbilt. Eight receivers caught passes and redshirt freshman DeAndrew White enjoyed a breakout game with two touchdown catches.

McCarron had a career night with 237 yards passing and four touchdowns. The touchdowns tied him with Mike Shula and John Parker Wilson for the second-most in school history, one behind Gary Hollingsworth’s record.

Tight end Brad Smelley says Alabama showed it’s “a two-phase team” and can throw it over the top if defenses stack defenders near the line of scrimmage.

Tailback Trent Richardson still topped 100 yards rushing for the fifth straight game with No. 2 runner Eddie Lacy out with a foot injury.
