Ethiopia’s Abdosh wins Boston Half Marathon

BOSTON (AP) — Ali Abdosh of Ethiopia won the Boston Half Marathon by 5 seconds over Sam Chelanga of Kenya on Sunday, and Janet Cherobon-Bawcom captured the women’s race.

Abdosh, Chelanga and Gilbert Okari of Kenya were packed tightly late the race before Abdosh broke away with a strong kick, finishing in 1 hour, 3 minutes, 36 seconds. Chelanga crossed in 1:03:41 and was followed by Okari in 1:03:48. Kenyans also took the next three spots with four Americans rounding out the top 10, led by Timothy Ritchie in 1:05:29.

Cherobon-Bawcom, an American citizen who was born in Kenya, won in 1:11:58. Defending champion Caroline Rotich of Kenya was second in 1:13:33, followed by Heather Cappello of the U.S. in 1:13:44.

The race is organized by the Boston Athletic Association, which conducts the Boston Marathon.
