Letter: Giving is a choice

In Matthew 16:21, Jesus remarks to a wealthy young man seeking the way to salvation “If you want to be perfect, go sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” Jesus was giving the young man a voluntary choice. Jesus did not say, “It is Mandatory to give all your wealth to the Romans [Democrats] to distribute to whom they deem needy.” Paul Holmes made the leap from Jesus’ teachings to being un-American, in an Oct. 4 letter, “It’s good to give.” By my interpretation, Jesus was giving the young man the liberty to make a choice, which follows American principles much closer than the Democrat version, “Give us everything you have, we will decide how much to leave you and who receives our largess” Since we are quoting scriptures, try this: “Thee shall not covet thy neighbors’ goods.”
