BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU punter Brad Wing has been replaying in his mind what could have been his first college touchdown, and the momentary, yet premature, expression of joy that led officials to flag him for taunting.
Wing says he agrees that taunting is disrespectful. He says he simply spread his arms in celebration near the end of his 52-yard run against Florida on Saturday because he’s never been anywhere near an end zone before.
Wing was the first player to be flagged under a new NCAA rule aimed at further curbing unsportsmanlike celebrations by disallowing touchdowns if the scoring player celebrates before crossing the goal line.
LSU won 41-11, which softened the blow. LSU coach Les Miles says he believes Wing was celebrating, not taunting, but that officials made the right call.
