PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Police have identified the victim killed in a northeast Portland apartment as a 26-year-old man. Neighbors say there were several young children in the unit when the shots were fired Monday night.
Police said Tuesday the medical examiner had identified the man as Deandre Newman, who died of multiple gunshot wounds.
The Oregonian reports that a preliminary police investigation suggests someone may have walked up to the apartment and shot Newman when he opened the door.
Firefighters climbed a ladder to remove the children from a second-floor window of the apartment so they wouldn't have to see the crime scene. The children ranged from about 9 months to age 9.
