WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says that he’s prepared to break his $447 billion jobs bill into pieces and move it that way if Congress doesn’t pass the entire measure.

Obama spoke Tuesday at a meeting of his jobs council in Pittsburgh just hours before the legislation faced near-certain defeat in the Senate at the hands of Republicans opposed to stimulus pending and a tax on millionaires.

It’s Obama’s most direct acknowledgement that he’d have to regroup and try a different approach if the legislation cannot pass in its entirety — which it almost certainly can’t.

Obama singled out public works spending as an area that should move quickly.
