LONDON (AP) — A British government official with direct knowledge of the situation says a deal to award London’s Olympic Stadium to West Ham soccer club after the 2012 Games has collapsed.

The official says the decision has been made due to ongoing legal challenges against a West Ham bid in favor of a rival London bid from Premier League club Tottenham.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of an official announcement, confirming a BBC story earlier Tuesday.

In February, West Ham was selected as the preferred bidder for the stadium, which it planned to downsize from 80,000 to 60,000 seats on a 125-year lease.

A new tender process is now set to open, with the stadium to remain in public ownership and be leased out to an anchor tenant.
