Lochte, Phelps, Franklin earn Golden Goggle nods

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Ryan Lochte, Michael Phelps and Missy Franklin earned a leading four nominations each for the Golden Goggle Awards honoring the year’s top performances in USA Swimming.

Lochte and Phelps were nominated for male athlete of the year. Lochte won five gold medals and a bronze at the world championships in July, while also setting the first individual world record since high-tech bodysuits were banned at the end of 2009. Phelps won seven medals, including four golds, at the meet in Shanghai.

Along with Franklin, Elizabeth Beisel, Rebecca Soni and Dana Vollmer were nominated for female athlete of the year. All four won individual gold medals at worlds.

The coaches for Lochte, Phelps and Franklin were among the nominees for coach of the year. Gregg Troy, Bob Bowman and Todd Schmitz were joined by nominees Teri McKeever and Dave Salo.

The winners will be determined through online fan voting, which ends Nov. 18.

The awards will be presented Nov. 20 in Los Angeles.
