PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh freshman forward Khem Birch likes to go against the grain. If he’s not dyeing part of his hair blonde then he’s looking for something to write on his shoes.

Birch says he just wants to be different. It’s one of the reasons the McDonald’s All-American chose the Panthers. Pitt has landed just six McDonald’s players in the program’s history, including junior forward Dante Taylor.

Coach Jamie Dixon has built the Panthers into a national power by taking blue collar players and coaching them up, and Dixon isn’t worried about Birch feeling pressure from having the All-American tag.

He says the freshman will have to learn at his own pace, though he expects Birch to make an impact this year for the Panthers, who being the season on Nov. 11 against Albany.
