In response to Carl Tuttle’s Oct. 11 letter, “Cat owners, protect your pets,” I have also followed the story of the teenage boys who shot more than 100 small pets. The sentences they got were a slap on the wrist for what they did. There is no justification for going after innocent animals that cannot defend themselves against someone with a gun.
This letter, however, is what I take issue with. How can anyone blame the victims? First, it was never mentioned that these pets were not in their yards at the time of the shootings. Does Tuttle really think cats are a danger to drivers? How exactly is that possible? I think cars are more of a danger to cats and dogs and other small animals.
If you want someone to be proactive, it should be parents. They should make every attempt to know who their teenagers are hanging out with, where they’re going in the family car, and finally make sure that the guns are locked up. It is our responsibility as human beings to take care of those among us who are vulnerable and innocent.
Where is the compassion for all of those beloved family pets that were senselessly shot and/or maimed?
