ATLANTA (AP) — A federal appeals court has issued a temporary ruling that blocks Alabama’s law requiring schools to check the immigration status of students.

The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued its ruling Friday. It also issued a temporary ruling that allows police to detain immigrants who are suspected of being in the country illegally.

Alabama’s law is considered the toughest in the nation.
