LAS VEGAS (AP) — Andre Agassi won his hometown Champion Series event Saturday night, beating Pete Sampras 8-5 in the Cancer Treatment Centers of America Championships at Thomas and Mack Center.

“This was the best, most energized crowd of the entire series so far this year,” Agassi said. “It means the world to me that everyone came out tonight to support us. It was a very special feeling, and I can’t thank the fans enough. I felt pretty relaxed early on, and the crowd definitely helped me tonight.”

Agassi won for the second time this year to move into second place in the season standings, 800 points behind Sampras with three events left. On Friday night in Los Angeles, Sampras beat Agassi 8-6 for his fifth victory of the season.

In the semifinals, Agassi beat Jim Courier 6-3, and Sampras topped John McEnroe 6-4.
