NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Chris Walley threw for three first-half touchdowns and Randy Maynes ran 14 yards for the clinching score with 7:43 remaining to lift Norfolk State to its fifth consecutive victory, 34-24 over Hampton on Saturday.

Maynes’ touchdown capped a drive on which Walley fumbled at the Hampton 25 after an 11-yard gain, and Kendall Noble recovered for the Spartans (6-1, 4-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) at the 22.

The Pirates (3-3, 1-2) then drove from their 24 into Norfolk State territory before the Spartans stiffened. A fourth-and-7 pass from the 36 from David Legree to Antwon Chisholm picked up just 6 yards.

Hampton got another chance after Scott Williams intercepted a Walley pass and returned it to Norfolk State’s 41. A holding penalty pushed the Pirates back and Legree was intercepted on fourth-and-20.

Walley completed 20 of 35 for 265 yards and an interception, and Maynes had 16 carries for 72 yards.
