PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A former Warm Springs, Ore., police officer, child protection supervisor and Head Start teacher has been arraigned on federal charges of aggravated sexual abuse involving five young girls.

The U.S. attorney’s office accuses 61-year-old Harry Hintsala of abusing the girls — all under age 12 at the time — over a multi-year period since his retirement.

A Dec. 13 trial date was set.

KTVZ reports (http://bit.ly/ozIgfK ) that at a defense lawyer’s request, a magistrate on Monday ordered Hintsala released to a Portland-area halfway house pending trial. He is prohibited from contact with minors.

The indictment alleges the abuse occurred at Hintsala’s home on the Warm Springs Indian reservation between 2007 and this year.
