JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. (AP) — A crew from Joint Base Lewis-McChord made a rescue flight to Antarctica to pick up an ailing American engineer.
Master Sgt. Jake Chappelle of the base’s 446th Reserve Airlift Wing tells The News Tribune that a crew from the base south of Tacoma, Wash., made the flight. The active duty 62nd Airlift Wing also had airmen on the rescue.
The newspaper reports that the flight that helped Renee-Nicole Douceur reach New Zealand for medical treatment is the second medical rescue that McChord-based crews have performed this year in Antarctica.
Douceur told The Associated Press in an email Monday that she slept for the whole plane ride to New Zealand.
