EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A 63-year-old Cottage Grove woman who took her missing father’s Social Security payment for more than 26 years was sentenced Tuesday in federal court in Eugene to 18 months in prison.
Sixty-three-year-old Martha Ann McRae also was ordered to pay $848,000 in restitution at the rate of at least $200 a month after her release. She pleaded guilty to Social Security fraud.
The Register Guard reports (http://bit.ly/qRn7Nt) the theft was discovered as part of a check on beneficiaries over 100 years of age. McRae’s father would be 104 if still alive today. He disappeared in 1984 near Las Vegas.
McRae had been withdrawing his benefits from a joint account.
