Washougal — Stabilization of a rock slope in the Columbia River Gorge will cause lane closures and delays on state Highway 14 starting this week, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
The work, starting Tuesday, will happen just west of Salmon Falls Road in western Skamania County, according to WSDOT. Drivers can expect lane closures and delays between 6:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday while Rotschy Inc. crews work on the slope above the highway. The project may be finished in as little as two weeks, weather permitting.
Workers will drill into the slope and use long bolts to secure loose rock. Crews will then cover the rock face with a “concrete-like substance” and tint it to blend with natural rock around it. The work site is in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.
The work is part of WSDOT’s $6.3 million safety improvement project for the Cape Horn area, scheduled for completion this fall.
