Cal's Montgomery: I had bladder cancer

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- California men's basketball coach Mike Montgomery says he was diagnosed with bladder cancer and had surgery last week that has left him cancer-free.

Montgomery made the announcement Friday at Pac-12 media day in Los Angeles.

The school announced Montgomery's surgery last week, but didn't disclose any details about it.

The 64-year-old coach says he had "high-grade" bladder cancer, a diagnosis he called scary.

Since the surgery, Montgomery says he is fine and will return full-time to running the Golden Bears' program on Monday. His assistants had been overseeing things since his surgery on Oct. 19.

Montgomery enters his fourth season at Cal.
