EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — Doctors who helped save the life of a 14-year-old girl stabbed more than 10 times by a classmate in a Snohomish High School restroom say her survival is remarkable.

Dr. Joseph Austin was among the doctors who discussed April Lutz’s recovery Friday with reporters at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. Not only was she stabbed in the lung and heart, The Daily Herald says her heart stopped three times before doctors could stabilize her Monday.

Austin said that the knife blade not only hit her heart, it came close to severing a major artery. Had the wound been four millimeters from where it was, he says she almost certainly would have died at the school.

Her friend Bekah Staudacher suffered a deep arm gash and a back puncture wound trying to defend April.

A 15-year-old girl is charged with attempted first-degree murder and second-degree assault.
