JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. (AP) — A Washington Ecology Department spokesman says nearly 1,000 gallons of jet fuel spilled onto a tarmac at Joint Base Lewis-McChord but crews cleaned it up before the fuel could contaminate nearby soil or water.

Ecology spokesman Curt Hart said military officials notified his agency early Friday morning. An Ecology Department crew that responded found the fuel contained in a catch basin. Military crews were cleaning it up.

Hart tells The News Tribune (http://bit.ly/rqGTN3) that Ecology is satisfied with the cleanup.

Base spokesman Joseph Piek (Peek) says base officials are investigating how the fuel spilled.
