ABERDEEN, Wash. (AP) — Investigators believe a fleeing jail inmate who was shot to death by police in Aberdeen had likely been planning an escape attempt for days.

Sheriff’s officials told KXRO and KBKW that John Gary Lies (lees) was facing felony charges in Washington and other states that would have given the 40-year-old Ocean City man a long prison sentence because of his criminal record.

They believe he faked a suicide attempt in jail so he would be taken to Grays Harbor Community Hospital. He made a break Oct. 21 from the hospital, and a corrections officer chased him down.

Police say Lies grabbed a woman and threatened her with a sharp object in a parking lot. When a Taser failed to stop him, the officer fired his gun.
