LAKEWOOD, Wash. (AP) — The Pierce County medical examiner’s office says a Lewis-McChord soldier shot by Lakewood police officers died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Police said Trent Lloyd Thorp shot himself in the head on a Lakewood street early Sunday before officers arrived. Lt. Chris Lawler says officers ordered him to drop his gun, and when he pointed it at them, four officers fired. He was hit nine times by police gunfire.

A medical examiner’s investigator, Rich O’Brien, said Friday he couldn’t say if the shot fired by Thorp would have been fatal.

Joint Base Lewis-McChord says the 26-year-old had arrived at the base in early October.

Neighbors told The News Tribune he had recently returned from Afghanistan and lived with his fiancee and two children.
