It was the Cy Whitmire show on Friday night at Woodland High School as the Beavers completed their regular season by defeating Black Hills of Tumwater

Whitmire racked up 193 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries and ended a Black Hills scoring threat in the fourth quarter with a 50-yard interception return. He racked 73 yards in the first quarter alone and 135 by halftime.

Woodland opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 45-yard TD pass from quarterback Adam Shoup to freshman receiver Trevor Huddleston.

Whitmire scored his first touchdown with 5:21 left in the quarter on a 1-yard run to put Woodland up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Black Hills scored the only points of the second quarter when quarterback Josh Freeto scored on an 11-yard TD run.

After intermission, Black Hills provided the only points of the third quarter on a 11-yard TD pass from Freeto to Kalvin Hargrave with 7:18 left.

Down 14-12, Black Hills had to throw the ball in an attempt to come back, but Whitmire’s interception with 4:49 left in the quarter ended the threat.

For added measure, the junior running back ran in a 1-yard TD run to put Woodland up 21-12.

Hunter Huddleston completed the scoring with his 20-yard scoring toss to Cy’s younger brother, freshman Eli Whitmire.

Woodland coach Mark Greenleaf was nostalgic in his postgame comments about his team’s turnaround from last year’s winless season to this year’s 5-4 squad, which will open the playoffs against North Thurston.

He paused before saying: “It’s just such a tribute to our kids and how hard they worked. They have a will to win and find a way to win.”

Cy Whitmire was very direct in explaining his team’s success this year.

“Heart. This teams plays as one and when we’re down, we know we can count on each other.”
