EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Police in Eugene say they’ve foiled a plot by a criminal gang to shoot members of a rival gang on Halloween.
Sgt. Scott McKee tells The Register-Guard (http://bit.ly/tbGEX7) that officers gathered information about the plan through confidential sources, then notified both gangs that they knew of the plan.
McKee says officers have stepped up patrols and gone door-to-door to notify residents of the threat of violence. Police say the plot could be retaliation for an attempted shooting on Sept. 23 that was thwarted by a malfunctioning handgun.
Police are advising parents to be vigilant if they take their children trick-or-treating and to stay with them at all times.
Officers say they’re continuing to investigate but conspiracy charges are difficult to prosecute.
