Letter: Take a closer look at Texas and Perry

The Columbian

Yep, what we need is another cowboy from Texas as president — “Bring ’em on!” Gov. Rick Perry.

We want to be just like Texas, a state that is tied with Mississippi for the highest percentage of workers earning minimum wage or less; has the highest rate of uninsured people; has few social benefits; has a governor who said the stimulus was “failed” and “misguided” but took $20 billion to fill budget shortfalls but rejected about $555 million for the unemployed; has a governor who appointed almost 4,000 government jobs, 25 percent of which went to campaign donors; ranks first in adults without high school diplomas but sixth highest in those with infectious diseases; ranks 35th in the share of its children being immunized and 40th in overall health; whose “Governor Goodhair” led an effort to lease state roads to foreign companies as toll roads; ranked 49th in verbal SAT scores, 47th in literacy and 46th in average math SAT scores.
