NORTH BEND, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say a 72-year-old woman in North Bend, Ore., called her son to say she thought her bed was afire.

Firefighters say Peggy Ann Holmstedt’s son arrived within minutes Wednesday afternoon but was forced back by flames shooting from the bedroom window.

When the firefighters arrived four minutes after that, they crawled through the smoke to carry her outside, but she was no longer breathing.

The World of Coos Bay (http://bit.ly/q52DXJ ) reported Friday that fire officials had determined that her death was caused by smoking in bed.
