Kulhavy, Pendrel win world mountain bike golds

CHAMPERY, Switzerland (AP) — Jaroslav Kulhavy of the Czech Republic and Canada’s Catharine Pendrel won the cross-country races at the Mountain Bike World Championships on Saturday.

Kulhavy completed six laps of the 3-mile course in 1 hour, 44 minutes, 30 seconds, for a 47-second margin over former world champion Nino Schurter of Switzerland.

Olympic champion Julien Absalon of France was third, 1:26 behind Kulhavy, who was 18th at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Pendrel, who was fourth at Beijing, won the five-lap women’s race in 1:46:14 seconds, beating Beijing silver medalist Maja Wloszczowska of Poland by 28 seconds.

Eva Lechner of Italy took bronze, 1:36 off Pendrel’s pace.
