With some big rushing numbers and controlling the clock, Woodland erased its memory of a winless 2010 season by posting an opening-week victory at Kalama.

Eli Whitmire rushed 19 times for 211 yards and three touchdowns, and Cy Whitmire had 173 yards on 20 carries for the Beavers.

Woodland set the tempo early by taking 7 minutes off the clock in its opening scoring drive.

Kalama tried to counter with a strong rushing game, scoring quickly on its possessions.

Woodland got a key TD as Cy Whitmire picked up a backfield fumble and ran 58 yards for a score as the Beavers took a 41-31 lead. He also had two interceptions as Kalama attempted to get back in the game.

Woodland finished with 515 yards rushing, something coach Mark Greenleaf said the Beavers have not done in at least 5 years.

“It was a great tribute to our offensive line,” Greenleaf said.

Next week: Woodland (1-0) at Ridgefield.
