NEW YORK (AP) — Second-seeded Vera Zvonareva moved into the U.S. Open quarterfinals for the second consecutive year, beating No. 22 Sabine Lisicki 6-2, 6-3 Sunday night.
Zvonareva was the runner-up at the U.S. Open and Wimbledon in 2010 and is still in search of her first Grand Slam title.
The Russian saved 6 of 7 break points against Lisicki, who was a semifinalist at Wimbledon this year.
Lisicki served much harder than Zvonareva, reaching 122 mph, but not particularly accurately. Lisicki put only 40 percent of her first serves in, double-faulted five times and wound up with only one ace.
Zvonareva’s next opponent is No. 9 Sam Stosur, who has won their past seven matches against each other.
