Brothers drown at Portland park

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Portland fire officials say two brothers who drowned while swimming at Kelley Point Park at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers were rescued at the same spot nearly two months ago.

Rescue crews say 24-year-old Kissan Kumar and his brother, 21-year-old Ram Kumar, drowned Monday. Divers recovered the bodies.

Portland Fire & Rescue's Capt. Scott Heesacker tells The Oregonian he was shocked and saddened to see the brothers were the same men rescued with two others on July 10 in the same area.

Portland Fire spokesman Paul Corah says it's not clear what led to their drowning. He says a language barrier hampered the search and investigation. However, neither man was wearing a life preserver. They drowned in an area where the river bottom suddenly drops from a few feet deep into the shipping canal.
