ABERDEEN, Wash. (AP) — A Renton man who killed the mother of his children has been sentenced to nearly 34 years in prison by a judge who said he didn’t deserve to live.
The Daily World newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/8ZQYJw ) that Charles E. Jefferson Jr. was given the maximum sentence allowed Tuesday — 407 months — by Grays Harbor Superior Court Judge Gordon Godfrey, who told him, “That’s about 407 months longer than you ought to be drawing breath.”
Jefferson pleaded guilty to first-degree murder for shooting his longtime girlfriend, 28-year-old Rebbecca Dietz of Aberdeen, at least five times in front of their daughter on May 3. Dietz died on June 9.
He turned to Dietz’s relatives in court and apologized for what he’d done to her family. A woman in the audience responded: “It was your family too.”
